Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where farm herding dogs were sorted into one breed with four coat types in the 1890s: the long black Groenendael (the AKC's Belgian Sheepdog), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the wiry Laekenois. A dog labeled Belgian Shepherd in Birmingham could be any of these, and many turn out to be Malinois or Malinois mixes, so coat and shedding vary.
Expect a lean, alert dog of roughly 40 to 75 pounds that bonds closely with its people and is often reserved with strangers. The drive that made the breed a police and military favorite shows up at home as a need for daily exercise, training and a task. Double coats shed heavily in spring and fall, so regular brushing is part of life. Each dog differs, so energy and temperament depend on more than the breed.
