The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, named for the Mechelen region of Belgium. Most registries treat the four Belgian varieties as one breed, while the AKC lists them separately. A Malinois is lean and square, with a fawn-to-mahogany coat, a black mask and erect ears. Its weather-resistant double coat sheds heavily twice a year.
Police and military units prize Malinois for their speed, focus and drive, and those same traits make them demanding pets. Many are devoted and sensitive, but a bored Malinois can turn frantic, destructive or reactive. In a hilly, humid city like Birmingham, daily structure matters as much as mileage. These dogs suit experienced, active adopters, though each dog's needs differ.
