The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The goal was a companion with a heavy, muscular frame and a people-loving temperament. Varieties are sorted by height, from compact Pockets to tall XLs, and the short, close coat needs only a weekly brushing.
Bullies commonly weigh somewhere between 40 and 110 pounds, and dogs vary a lot in build, energy and sociability. Many are affectionate and eager to please, but their strength makes early training and leash manners important, and tolerance of other dogs differs from dog to dog. In Birmingham's long, humid summers, heavier and shorter-muzzled Bullies need extra attention to heat and weight.
