American Bulldogs descend from working bulldogs that settlers brought to colonial America. On Southern farms they caught loose cattle and feral hogs and guarded homesteads. The type nearly vanished after World War II before John D. Johnson and Alan Scott revived it, giving us the heavier, shorter-muzzled bully type and the leaner, more athletic standard type. Many dogs are a blend of the two.
Many American Bulldogs are affectionate, confident family dogs with a protective streak and plenty of stamina. Their strength makes early socialization, consistent reward-based training and secure handling important from the start, and dogs vary widely in energy and sociability. The short coat sheds moderately and needs little beyond brushing. Because the breed is often lumped in with bully breeds, confirm what a landlord or insurer allows.
