Birmans are medium-sized, semi-longhaired colorpoint cats with deep blue eyes and white paws, usually weighing 7 to 14 pounds. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the sacred temple cat story is legend rather than documented history. Points come in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and several other colors.
Many Birmans are gentle, sociable cats with soft voices who like to stay near their people without being demanding. The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired breeds, though weekly combing helps, especially when heated indoor air dries the coat through a Milwaukee winter. Birmans take about three years to mature fully, and each cat's personality varies.
