The British Shorthair is a round-faced, thickly built cat with one of the densest coats of any breed. It traces back to working street and farm cats in Britain, was shown at the first organized cat show in London in 1871, and was rebuilt after the world wars with help from Persians and other outcrosses. The classic look is a plush blue coat with copper eyes, but the breed comes in many colors and patterns.
Many are calm, quiet companions that follow their people from room to room rather than demanding a lap, and most dislike being carried. They mature slowly, often not filling out until about three years old. In Seattle's long indoor season, plan on weekly brushing for the dense, moderately shedding coat, measured portions to prevent weight gain, and vet visits that include heart and kidney checks.
