The British Shorthair descends from the working street and farm cats of Britain and appeared at the first organized cat show in London in 1871. Round-faced and thick-bodied, with one of the densest coats of any cat, it comes in dozens of colors and patterns, though the plush blue cat with copper eyes is the classic image. Adults commonly weigh 7 to 17 pounds, males being the heavier, and they fill out slowly, often not until about age three.
Many are calm, quiet companions that like to stay near their people without demanding a lap, and most dislike being carried. That makes them easy roommates in a Virginia Beach townhouse or apartment, as long as the household plans for weekly brushing, careful portions and regular checkups that include heart and kidney health. Each cat differs, so a shelter cat's own personality matters more than the breed label.
