Birmans are semi-longhaired cats with colorpoint markings, deep blue eyes and pure white paws, called gloves in front and laces behind. The modern breed was developed in France after a pair of cats arrived from Burma around 1919; the tale of sacred temple cats is legend, not documented history. Kittens are born pale and their points darken with age. Adults usually weigh 7 to 14 pounds, and females tend to be smaller.
Many Birmans are gentle, sociable and soft-voiced, and they like to stay near their people without demanding attention. Their silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing helps. They take about three years to mature fully. In Virginia Beach, that makes them an easy match for adopters who want a calm indoor companion, though each cat's personality varies.
