The American Shorthair descends from working cats that traveled with early settlers to protect cargo and stores from rodents, then guarded barns and farms across North America. Early in the twentieth century the sturdiest of them became a recognized pedigreed breed, first called the Domestic Shorthair. Today it's a solid, muscular, medium-sized cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a thick, hard-textured coat in dozens of colors, the silver tabby being the classic look.
Most American Shorthairs are easygoing, quietly affectionate and happy to share a room without demanding attention. They enjoy hunting-style play and tend to gain weight if meals and activity aren't managed. Many shorthaired cats in Virginia Beach homes are random-bred domestic shorthairs that look and act much the same, so a cat's own personality matters more than its label.
