The Maine Coon is New England's native big longhair, descended from cats that arrived with British settlers and adapted to hard northern winters. It's the largest non-hybrid pedigreed breed, usually 10 to 20 pounds, with males heavier, and it can take three to five years to fill out. The shaggy, water-resistant coat is shorter on the shoulders and longer on the belly and britches, with a frontal ruff, tufted ears and a plumed tail.
Many Maine Coons are playful, people-oriented and dog-like, chirping and trilling rather than meowing loudly. That coat needs combing two or three times a week, and more during spring shedding, which matters in a humid city like Memphis. Cats vary, so judge the cat in front of you rather than the breed's reputation.
