Calico describes a coat, not a breed: white with patches of black and orange, or softer gray and cream in the dilute version. The pattern appears in domestic shorthairs, longhairs and several pedigreed breeds, but the Calicos most adopters meet are domestic shorthairs, typically 6 to 12 pounds and living 12 to 18 years. Nearly all are female.
That means care looks like ordinary house-cat care: vaccines, dental checkups, a healthy weight and regular play. Coat color doesn't predict personality, so a Calico might be shy, chatty or bold. In Franklin, where rain keeps many days indoors and homes range from Cool Springs apartments to Fieldstone Farms neighborhoods, most Calicos settle in well with perches, scratching posts and a steady routine. A longhaired mix will need more brushing.
