Somalis and Similar Breeds Available for Adoption Near Chattanooga

About the Somali breed

Often described as a longhaired Abyssinian, the Somali developed when a recessive longhair gene surfaced in Abyssinian litters in the mid-twentieth century. These fluffy kittens became a breed of their own in North America and elsewhere, named after Somalia, which borders Ethiopia, the country once called Abyssinia, and the Somali gained championship status with the CFA registry in 1979. Its medium-length ticked coat comes in ruddy, red, blue and fawn, with a ruff and a full, fox-like tail.

Many Somalis are active, curious and bold, opening cupboards, following people from room to room and joining every household project. They tend to be affectionate without being lap cats and usually enjoy interactive play. Adopters should plan for daily play and climbing space, weekly combing and attention to inherited conditions that run in the Abyssinian family.

Owning a Somali in Chattanooga

Having a Somali in Chattanooga

A Somali brings constant curiosity and athletic play, wrapped in a soft, fox-like coat that is easier to care for than it looks. Its activity level, social nature and inherited health risks shape what kind of home will keep this cat happy.

Temperament

Somalis tend to be outgoing, inquisitive and people-oriented, often greeting visitors and supervising household activity. Many prefer engagement to cuddling and may grow bored or mischievous if left alone for long stretches. They often get along with other cats and cat-friendly dogs after careful introductions. Each adopted cat's history still matters most.

Exercise Needs

Most Somalis need several interactive play sessions a day, with wand toys, chase games and climbing. Food puzzles and clicker training keep their busy minds occupied, and many enjoy learning tricks. Tall cat trees and window perches let them explore safely indoors. Harness walks can suit cats that are comfortable with gradual training.

Health Considerations

Somalis share some inherited risks with Abyssinians, including pyruvate kinase deficiency, which causes anemia, and a form of progressive retinal atrophy leading to vision loss. Renal amyloidosis and gum disease also occur in the breed family. Not every cat is affected. Review health records with a veterinarian and maintain regular dental care.

Living Space

Somalis adapt to apartments or houses when they have vertical space, sturdy climbing furniture and plenty of toys. They are quick to explore, so secure cabinets, window screens and balconies. A busy household or a second playful cat can help keep them company. Indoor living with supervised outdoor enclosures is safest.
