Bengals are a medium-sized, muscular cat, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a short, soft coat that's spotted, rosetted or marbled and often has a glittery sheen. The breed began in the United States in the 1960s from crosses between domestic cats and Asian leopard cats, but today's pet Bengals are many generations removed and fully domestic. Most live 10 to 15 years.
Bengals are intelligent, curious and athletic, and many stay kittenish well into adulthood. They often learn tricks, walk on a harness and play with running water. In Chattanooga, that energy suits households with a window perch, a tall cat tree and time for daily play. Light weekly brushing handles the low-to-moderate shedding, though Bengals aren't hypoallergenic. A cat's personality varies, so judge each cat's energy rather than the coat alone.
