The Bengal began in the United States in the 1960s, with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat. Pet Bengals today are many generations removed from that ancestor and fully domestic. They're medium-sized, usually 8 to 15 pounds, and muscular, with a short, soft coat in spotted, rosetted or marbled patterns, often with a glittery sheen.
Bengals are curious, smart and busy, and many stay kittenish for years. Some learn fetch, walk on a harness or play with running water. In Sioux Falls, where cats spend much of the year inside, that energy needs outlets like climbing shelves, puzzle feeders and daily play. Shedding is low to moderate, and a weekly brush is usually enough. Bengals vary, so some are calmer than the stereotype suggests.
