The Maine Coon is one of North America's oldest natural breeds, shaped by New England farms and harbors. It's a big, rugged longhair with a shaggy, water-resistant coat, a frontal ruff, tufted ears, snowshoe-like paws and a long plumed tail. Males often reach 18 to 20 pounds, females run smaller, and they can take three to five years to fill out.
Many Maine Coons are gentle, playful and dog-like, chirping and trilling rather than meowing loudly. Shedding is moderate to high, so regular combing matters, especially in Greenville's humid summers. Heart and hip problems are documented in the breed, and a veterinarian can check for them. Cats vary, so a Maine Coon's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
