The American Shorthair descends from European cats that traveled with early settlers to guard cargo and farms from rodents. Those working cats became a pedigreed breed in the early 1900s. The result is a muscular, medium-to-large cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a dense, hard-textured coat in dozens of colors, with the silver tabby the best known.
Many American Shorthairs are easygoing, quietly affectionate and happy to supervise rather than demand attention. They enjoy hunting-style play, and many gain weight easily without it. Most shorthaired cats in shelters are random-bred domestic shorthairs with a similar look, so adopters may meet cats with these traits under either name. Each cat's personality still varies.
