Domestic Long Hair isn't a breed. It's the label shelters use for a mixed-ancestry cat with a medium to long coat, the fluffy counterpart of the Domestic Short Hair. These cats come in every color and pattern, from tabby and calico to solid black, smoke and bicolor, and most adults weigh 8 to 15 pounds, though long fur can make them look bigger. Some resemble a Maine Coon or Persian without sharing that ancestry.
With no breed standard, size, coat texture and personality vary widely from one cat to the next. What they share is fur that needs regular brushing to prevent mats and hairballs. In Charleston, that coat meets humid summers, so expect to brush more often and keep your cat cool indoors. Spending time with a cat before adopting tells you far more than the label does.
