Birmans are colorpointed, semi-longhaired cats known for pure white paws, called gloves in front and laces where the white runs up the back of the hind legs, and always deep blue eyes. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919. The tale of sacred temple cats is legend, not documented history.
Many Birmans are gentle, sociable and soft-voiced, happiest close to their people without being demanding. The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired breeds, though weekly combing still helps. They take about three years to mature fully. Every cat differs, but adopters who want a mellow indoor companion often find the breed an easy fit.
