The Bengal is a medium, muscular cat, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a spotted, rosetted or marbled coat that often has a glittery shimmer. The breed began in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat. Pet Bengals today are many generations removed from that ancestor and are fully domestic.
What stands out is the mind. Bengals are curious and athletic, and many fetch, walk on a harness and play in running water well into adulthood. They reward people who want an interactive cat and are a poor match for anyone hoping for a quiet lap cat. The short coat sheds little to moderately, and a weekly brushing keeps it glossy. In OKC, where many people work long days, a second playful cat can help.
