The American Curl began with a stray named Shulamith, who turned up in Lakewood, California, in 1981. The curl comes from a single dominant gene, and the breed earned championship status in the 1990s. Curls are medium-sized, about 5 to 10 pounds, with silky longhaired or shorthaired coats in every color and pattern.
Personality is the draw. Many Curls stay playful well into adulthood and enjoy company, which suits a household where someone is around. Coats need only light combing, and no breed-linked health problems have been documented. The ears need gentle handling because the cartilage is firm and can be hurt if bent. Because the breed is uncommon, adopters in OKC may also meet curl-eared mixes, and each cat's personality matters more than its breed.
