The Abyssinian is a medium, lithe cat with a short, ticked coat in which each hair carries several bands of color, plus large ears and almond eyes. The breed was developed in Britain and takes its name from Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, though genetic research points to ancestors from the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia.
Abys are curious, athletic and people-focused, though many aren't lap cats. In Oklahoma City, that means a secure indoor home with plenty of vertical room, since a cat this active can turn a quiet afternoon into an expedition. The short coat needs little grooming, but inherited conditions such as pyruvate kinase deficiency and retinal degeneration are worth understanding before you adopt.
