The Havana, called the Havana Brown by some registries, came out of Britain in the 1950s, when chocolate-carrying Siamese cats were paired with black domestic shorthairs. The result is a medium, muscular cat with a glossy chocolate coat, brown whiskers, green eyes and large, forward-tilted ears. Most weigh 6 to 10 pounds and live 10 to 15 years.
Havanas are curious and people-focused, and many use a paw to investigate objects and people. Their voice is softer than a Siamese's. The short coat sheds little and needs only an occasional brush. The breed is genuinely rare, so in Columbus an adoptable cat is more likely to be a brown shorthair or Havana mix. Those cats may share the look or the sociable streak, but each has its own personality, so judge the cat in front of you.
