The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. Despite the name, it has no link to Indonesia; it was named for the graceful way Balinese dancers move. Expect the Siamese colorpoint pattern, vivid blue eyes, a slender body and a silky single coat that ends in a plumed tail. A sleeker modern type and a sturdier traditional type both exist.
Many Balinese are bright, social and playful, a little quieter than Siamese but still chatty. With no dense undercoat, the coat rarely mats, so grooming stays easy. What the breed asks for is attention: daily play, puzzle toys and high places to climb. Adult cats vary in personality, so spend some time with a cat before deciding whether the match feels right.
