The American Curl began with Shulamith, a longhaired black stray found in Lakewood, California, in 1981. Her kittens inherited ears that curve backward, a trait that comes from a single dominant gene. Curls are medium-sized, moderately built cats, usually 5 to 10 pounds, with silky longhaired or shorthaired coats in every color and pattern. Kittens are born with straight ears, which start curling within days and set around four months.
At home, the Curl's sociable streak matters most. Many like company, learn tricks and keep their curiosity for years. Coats need only light combing, and the ears need gentle handling because the cartilage is firm and can be hurt if bent. Curls are uncommon, so some cats you meet may be curl-eared mixes, and each cat's personality counts for more than its breed.
