The Chinchilla is usually a Persian with a silver-tipped coat: each long white hair ends in a dab of black, so the fur shimmers like frost. The look goes back to an English cat named Silver Lambkin, born in 1882. Most registries treat chinchilla as a Persian color rather than a separate breed, so cats listed as Chinchillas are usually Persians or Persian mixes. Green or blue-green eyes with dark rims complete the look.
Many are calm, gentle and quiet, and they prefer predictable routines to chaos. In a city that rarely slows down, a quiet perch and a door that closes are worth planning for. Expect high shedding, daily combing and face cleaning, and Persian health risks such as kidney disease and breathing or eye trouble. Cats vary, so any one Chinchilla may be more or less laid-back.
