Calico describes a coat, not a breed: white with patches of black and orange, or gray and cream in the softer dilute version. The pattern shows up in domestic shorthairs and longhairs as well as several pedigreed breeds, and nearly all calicos are female. In Buffalo's older two-flats, a typical calico of 6 to 12 pounds will find the warmest sunny spot quickly.
Care follows whatever cat is underneath the patches: vaccines, dental care, weight control and regular checkups, plus brushing that runs from weekly for shorthairs to several times a week for longhairs. Indoor cats often live 12 to 18 years, so adopting a calico is a long commitment. Personality ranges from shy to bold, and spending time with a cat is the best way to learn what she's like.
