Dilute tortoiseshell is a coat pattern rather than a breed. Instead of black and orange, the cat shows blue-gray and cream, in patches or a soft marbled blend, because she carries two copies of a recessive dilution gene. Nearly all are female, since the pattern needs two X chromosomes. Most are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, though the coloring also appears in Persians, British Shorthairs and Maine Coons.
Coat color doesn't reliably predict personality, so a dilute tortie might be shy, chatty, cuddly or aloof. In Las Vegas, where summers are long and homes are built around air conditioning, an indoor life with climbing spots, scratching posts and daily play suits most of them well. Moderate shedding means a weekly brush for shorthairs and more often for longhaired cats.
