The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese. Developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s, it was named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers, not for any link to Indonesia. It has the colorpoint pattern, vivid blue eyes and slender build of a Siamese, with a silky coat that ends in a plumed tail. Modern and traditional types differ in how sleek or sturdy they look.
Many Balinese are bright, social and playful, and they usually want a hand in whatever you're doing. They tend to be a bit quieter than Siamese but are still talkative. With no dense undercoat, the coat is easy to keep up, though these cats typically do poorly when left alone for long stretches. Shelter cats vary, so spend time with a cat before deciding.
