The Abyssinian's short, ticked coat shows several bands of color on each hair, which gives it a warm, glowing look. Large ears and almond eyes add to a lean, muscular build, usually between 6 and 12 pounds. The breed was developed in Britain and is among the oldest recognized, though its name points to Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, and genetic research suggests ancestors from the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia.
Abys are busy, curious and athletic, and many are affectionate without being lap cats. In Albuquerque's dry climate their light, close-lying coat needs little more than occasional brushing, so the bigger commitment is time: daily interactive play, climbing space and company. Like any cat, each Aby has its own personality, and some are shy or mellow.
