The Maine Coon is the largest non-hybrid pedigreed cat, a rugged longhair that developed on New England farms and harbors. Most weigh 10 to 20 pounds, with males at the top of that range, and they often take three to five years to reach full size. The shaggy, water-resistant coat is shorter over the shoulders and longer on the belly and britches, with a frontal ruff, tufted ears and a plumed tail. Brown tabby is the classic color, though nearly every color appears.
Many Maine Coons are sociable, playful and a little dog-like, following people from room to room and chirping or trilling rather than yowling. Some like playing in water. In a compact Trenton home, plan for sturdy furniture, oversized litter boxes and combing a few times a week. Cats vary, so a Maine Coon you meet may be calmer or more reserved than the breed's reputation.
