Domestic Long Hair is a coat description, not a pedigree. Shelters use the label for mixed-ancestry cats with medium to long fur, and they turn up in nearly every color and pattern: tabby, calico, tortoiseshell, smoke and solid black. Some resemble a Maine Coon or a Persian without sharing that ancestry. Most adults weigh 8 to 15 pounds, and the long fur can make them look even bigger.
Because there's no breed standard, personality varies from cat to cat. Some are lap cats, others are bold climbers, and some take weeks to warm up. The common thread is a coat that needs brushing a few times a week to prevent mats and hairballs. In a city of older bungalows and rental apartments, that grooming habit matters more than square footage.
