Despite the name, the Balinese has no connection to Indonesia. It's essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s from longhaired kittens born in Siamese litters, and named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers. The coat is silky and single-layered, with the pointed pattern and blue eyes of a Siamese, a slender body and a plumed tail. A modern wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type both exist.
Many Balinese are bright, playful and eager to be part of everything. They're usually a bit quieter than Siamese but still talkative, and they like fetch, puzzle toys and high perches. With no dense undercoat, grooming is easy, though a Balinese typically wants daily company and may fuss if ignored. In Raleigh, that mostly means planning an indoor life with plenty to climb.
