Birmans are semi-longhaired colorpoint cats with deep blue eyes and white "gloves" on the front paws. The modern breed took shape in France after a pair of cats arrived from Burma around 1919, while the sacred temple cat story is legend. Adults usually weigh 7 to 14 pounds and take about three years to mature fully.
Their silky coat has little undercoat, so it tangles less than many longhaired breeds, though weekly combing keeps it smooth. Most Birmans are sociable and gentle and like company, which suits a Jackson household where someone is home often or another friendly pet is around. They do best indoors, away from the heat, storms and loose dogs that roam parts of the city. Like any cats, they vary, so each Birman's own personality matters most.
