The Bengal began in the United States in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, but pet Bengals today are many generations removed from that ancestor and are fully domestic. They're medium-sized, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a muscular build, a short pelt that sheds lightly and spotted, rosetted or marbled markings, often with a glittery sheen.
Most of that energy gets spent indoors in Jackson. Plan on climbing shelves, puzzle feeders and a couple of play sessions daily, especially around dawn and dusk when many Bengals are busiest. Bengals aren't hypoallergenic, and some are cuddlier or more reserved than others. A second playful cat can help if the house is empty during the workday.
