The Abyssinian is a medium, lithe, muscular cat with a short, fine, ticked coat, where each hair carries several bands of color, and large, cupped ears. Ruddy, red, blue and fawn are the usual colors. The breed was developed in Britain, and despite the name, genetic research points to the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia. Most weigh 6 to 12 pounds and live roughly 9 to 15 years.
An Aby's curiosity is the main thing to plan for in a Kansas City home. They climb, open cabinets and investigate every bag, so sturdy cat trees and puzzle feeders help. The short coat needs little grooming beyond an occasional brushing. Abys are affectionate and people-focused without usually being lap cats, and personalities vary, so spend time with a cat before deciding.
