Tabby describes a coat pattern, not a breed. Look for the M-shaped mark on the forehead, plus stripes, swirls, spots or ticked hairs on the body, legs and tail. The pattern shows up on brown, orange, gray, silver and cream cats, and on everything from domestic shorthairs to Maine Coons. Most adoptable tabbies are medium-sized domestic shorthairs weighing roughly 6 to 14 pounds.
Because the pattern says little about personality, a tabby's temperament, energy and health come from the cat's own background and age. Orange tabbies have a reputation for being outgoing, partly because most orange cats are male. Shorthaired tabbies shed moderately all year, so weekly brushing keeps furniture and floors manageable, while a longer coat needs more time. Spending time with the cat is the best way to judge the match.
