Calico describes a tricolor coat: white with patches of black and orange, or gray and cream in the softer dilute version. It shows up in domestic shorthairs and longhairs and in several pedigreed breeds, and nearly all calicos are female. Most adoptable calicos are ordinary domestic cats, medium-sized at roughly 6 to 12 pounds and living 12 to 18 years with good care.
Coat color doesn't predict personality, despite the "tortitude" reputation. Some calicos are chatty lap cats and others are reserved and independent, so spend time with a cat and watch how she handles being picked up, loud noises and other pets. Shedding is moderate. Weekly brushing covers most shorthairs, while longhaired mixes need it more often.
