A Chinchilla cat is usually a Persian with a striking silver coloring: each long white hair is tipped with black at the very end, so the coat shimmers like frosted silver. The look traces to an English cat named Silver Lambkin, born in 1882 and regarded as the father of the line. Most registries treat chinchilla as a Persian color rather than a separate breed, though one South African registry recognizes a Chinchilla Longhair. Green or blue-green eyes rimmed in dark pigment complete the look, and golden chinchillas also exist.
Many Chinchillas share the Persian's calm, gentle and quiet temperament and prefer peaceful, predictable homes. Their glamorous coat comes with real work, including daily combing, regular baths and face cleaning. Adopters should also plan for Persian health risks such as kidney disease and the breathing and eye issues tied to a flatter face.
