Birmans are semi-longhaired colorpoint cats with deep blue eyes and pure white paws. The white is called gloves on the front feet, and laces run up the back of the hind legs. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the sacred temple cat story is legend rather than documented history.
Many Birmans are gentle, sociable and soft-voiced, happy to stay close to their people without demanding attention. The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing still helps. In Louisville, that coat matters most during humid summers and dry, heated winter air. Cats vary, so a Birman's own personality counts for more than the breed description.
