The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese. Despite the name, it has no link to Indonesia. The breed was developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s from longhaired kittens born in Siamese litters, and it was named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers. It has the Siamese colorpoint pattern, vivid blue eyes, a slender body and a silky single coat that ends in a plumed tail. Both a modern, wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type exist.
Many Balinese are bright, social and playful, and they want to be part of whatever is happening at home. They're usually quieter than Siamese but still talkative. With no dense undercoat, the coat rarely mats, so it suits renters who want low-fuss grooming but can offer daily play. Personalities vary, especially among adult cats.
