Despite the name, the Balinese has no connection to Indonesia. It's essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s and named for the graceful way Balinese dancers move. Slender and medium-sized, usually 5 to 10 pounds, it has vivid blue eyes, a pointed pattern and a silky single coat that ends in a plumed tail. A modern wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type both exist.
Balinese are bright, social and playful, a little quieter than Siamese but still talkative. With no dense undercoat, the coat stays tidy with brushing a few times a month. The bigger commitment is attention: a Balinese left alone all day can grow bored or clingy. Adult cats vary, so spend time with the cat you're considering.
