Your guide to finding and caring for a Domestic Medium Hair in Decatur
Domestic Medium Hair cats suit Decatur's older houses well, especially the tall-windowed ones in the West End. A cat with a fluffy coat can claim a sunny sill on one of those tree-lined streets and watch squirrels all afternoon. They're easygoing about apartment life too, whether that's near Millikin Heights or downtown, as long as there's a scratching post and a few minutes of play each day. With winters this cold, an indoor cat with a warm perch is usually the happiest one.

Domestic Medium Hair
Domestic Medium Hair is a coat description rather than a breed. It covers mixed-ancestry cats whose fur falls between short and long, often with a fuller tail, toe tufts and a soft undercoat, in every color and pattern from tabby to tuxedo to calico. Most are medium-sized, roughly 6 to 14 pounds, and many live well into their teens.
Because ancestry is mixed, size, personality and health vary from cat to cat, so the best guide is how the cat behaves when you meet it. Expect a little more brushing than a shorthair needs, especially in spring and fall when shedding peaks. In Decatur, where homes range from older houses to rentals, these adaptable cats usually settle in wherever they get play, perches and a quiet place to rest.
Having a Domestic Medium Hair in Decatur
A Domestic Medium Hair's traits come from its mixed ancestry, upbringing and age, so expect a range. In Decatur, the practical points are an indoor routine, regular brushing for the semi-long coat, and a warm, safe spot through cold winters.
Domestic medium hairs run from shy lap cats to bold, chatty explorers, and the coat says little about which one you'll meet. Many are adaptable and affectionate once settled. In a Decatur rental or a family house, how the cat has done around children, dogs and other cats matters more than its looks.
Plan on two or three short play sessions a day with wand toys, balls or treat puzzles, since most have typical house-cat energy. Decatur's long winters keep cats inside, so window perches and climbing spots help burn energy. Kittens and young adults need more play, while seniors often prefer gentler games and warm resting spots.
Dental disease, obesity, urinary problems and kidney disease in later years are the usual concerns, and the fuller coat can mean hairballs and mats without regular brushing. Decatur requires a yearly rabies vaccination for cats, which fits naturally into the annual checkup, where a veterinarian can also review weight and teeth.
Apartments and houses both work when there are scratching posts, perches and hiding spots. Shy cats appreciate a quiet room while settling in. Indoor living is safest, and a window perch or catio gives outdoor interest without traffic, predators or disease. In a small rental, a tall cat tree adds more usable space than extra floor clutter.

Yes. Decatur has no breed-specific rules, and Illinois law prohibits cities from making them. Cats 4 months and older need a city registration tag, $15 a year if spayed or neutered, plus a yearly rabies vaccination. The tag must be worn at all times, and cats can't roam at large, so plan on an indoor or supervised life.
Yes, as indoor cats. Their fuller coat and soft undercoat are comfortable through Decatur winters, though outdoor time still isn't safe when January lows hover near 20°F. Give the cat a warm perch away from drafts, keep the litter box in a heated room, and brush regularly so the undercoat doesn't mat.
Yes. These adaptable cats do well in apartments, and many Decatur renters keep them. The city sets no cap on the number of pets, but a landlord's pet terms apply, so confirm them in writing. Provide a scratching post, a window perch and daily play, and brush the coat a few times a week to keep fur under control.
Often, yes, especially for someone who wants a calm indoor companion. Decatur's mix of older houses and rentals gives these cats room to settle, and its cold winters suit a home-based routine. Expect brushing several times a week and daily play. Because personality varies from cat to cat, meeting the cat matters more than coat length.
Plan on brushing two or three times a week, and daily during spring and fall shedding. Check the britches, belly and behind the ears, where mats form first. Most owners groom at home, so grooming fits within the yearly Other costs of $515 to $1,265; a professional mat removal would add to that.
Decatur has city buses and the Decatur Moves shared-ride service, but no pet policy is published for either, though service animals are welcome on Decatur Moves. Check current pet rules with the Decatur Public Transit System before riding, and use a secure carrier that fits on your lap. There's no subway or rail.
Major cat registries recognize anywhere from roughly 45 to more than 70 pedigreed breeds, depending on the registry, with counts changing as new breeds are accepted. Most pet cats, however, belong to no breed at all. Domestic shorthair, medium hair and longhair are coat descriptions for these mixed-ancestry cats, not breeds.
Medium hair on a cat means a coat noticeably longer and fluffier than a typical shorthair but shorter and less dense than a true longhair. Medium-haired cats often have a soft undercoat, a fuller or plumed tail, and tufts on the ears or between the toes, without the heavy neck ruff and long, flowing coat seen in longhaired cats like Persians.
