Birmans are colorpointed, semi-longhaired cats recognized by their pure white paws, called gloves in front and laces where the white runs up the back of the hind legs. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the story of sacred temple cats is legend rather than documented history. Points come in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and several newer colors, always with deep blue eyes.
Many Birmans are sociable cats with soft voices who stay close to their people without being demanding. The silky coat has no heavy undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired breeds, though weekly combing still helps. They take about three years to mature fully. Cats vary, so a Birman's own personality matters more than the breed description.
