The Bengal is a medium, muscular cat, usually 8 to 15 pounds, with a short, soft coat that is spotted, rosetted or marbled and often shimmers with glitter at the hair tips. The breed started in the United States in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and Asian leopard cats, but pet Bengals today are many generations removed and fully domestic. Most live 10 to 15 years.
Bengals are bright, curious and athletic, and many stay kittenish well into adulthood. They fetch, learn tricks and love running water. Much of that energy has to be spent indoors for a good part of the year in Des Moines, so plan on daily play, climbing space and puzzle feeders. Cats vary, and a calmer, older Bengal is possible, but most will want to be involved in whatever you're doing.
