The American Bobtail is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a naturally short tail and a wild-looking, tabby-leaning face, though its coat can be short or medium-long in nearly any color. The breed traces back to Yodie, a short-tailed stray found in Arizona in the late 1960s, and the short tail comes from a dominant gene.
Bobtails are playful and people-oriented without being frantic, and they mature slowly over two to three years. In Des Moines, they usually do well in a licensed, indoor home with plenty of play and a weekly brushing habit. A short tail can occasionally come with spine or hip concerns, so a veterinarian's exam is worthwhile soon after adoption.
