Domestic Long Hair is a coat description, not a breed. Shelters use the label for cats of mixed ancestry with medium to long fur, and they come in every color and pattern, from tabby and calico to solid black, smoke and bicolor. Most adults weigh 8 to 15 pounds, though thick fur can make a cat look bigger than it is, and many live 12 to 18 years.
Because there's no breed standard, size and personality differ from cat to cat. What they tend to share is practical: moderate to heavy shedding, a coat that mats without regular brushing, and the broad genetic diversity that often keeps mixed cats healthy. In Honolulu's condos and apartments, that grooming routine and a cool place to rest matter more than floor space. Time spent with a cat before adopting tells you far more than the label does.
