The Devon Rex began around 1960 in Devon, England, with a curly-coated kitten named Kirlee. His wavy fur came from a different gene than the Cornish Rex's, so the two are separate breeds. Devons are easy to spot: oversized ears, big eyes, a slender body and a short, soft, rippled coat, often with crinkled whiskers. Many people call them "poodle cats."
In Honolulu, a Devon's sparse coat is less of a worry than it would be in a cold climate, but sun and humidity still matter. Skin can get oily, ears collect wax, and pale cats can sunburn at a sunny window or on a lanai. Devons are playful, food-motivated and eager to learn tricks, though each cat's personality differs, so meeting a cat in person says more than any breed description.
