The Burmilla began in Britain in 1981, when a Chinchilla Persian male and a lilac Burmese female mated by accident and produced four shaded silver kittens. The name blends Burmese and Chinchilla. These are muscular, medium-sized cats, usually 6 to 13 pounds, with green eyes outlined in dark color and a silky coat that is pale at the root and tipped with color. Both shorthaired and semi-longhaired versions exist.
Many Burmillas pair the Burmese's playfulness with the Persian's calm, staying kittenish into adulthood without being demanding. They're usually people-oriented and comfortable with other pets. In Honolulu, where homes are often apartments and the weather stays warm, that adaptable, low-key nature is a real plus, though every cat is different and the breed is uncommon.
