The American Shorthair descends from working cats that traveled with early settlers to keep rodents off ships and out of grain stores. Today it is a medium-to-large, muscular cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a short, dense, hard-textured coat in dozens of colors, with the silver tabby as the classic look. Most adults weigh between 6 and 15 pounds, males heavier, and they fill out slowly over several years.
In a Honolulu home, that easygoing nature usually means a cat that supervises from a perch and joins in when something moves. Many get along with children and calm dogs. Shorthaired cats with the same look are common, and many are random-bred domestic shorthairs with a similar steady personality. Appetite is the main thing to manage, since many American Shorthairs gain weight easily.
