The Munchkin is defined by one feature: legs noticeably shorter than a typical cat's, caused by a naturally occurring dominant gene mutation. The modern breed began in Louisiana in 1983, when a music teacher took in a pregnant short-legged stray named Blackberry. Munchkins come in every color and pattern, in both shorthaired and longhaired coats, and some kittens inherit ordinary legs instead.
Many Munchkins are playful, curious and outgoing, and they tend to run and corner quickly despite their stature, though they jump less high than long-legged cats. The breed is also debated. TICA recognizes it, while several major registries decline to because of welfare concerns about dwarfism. Adopters should expect a lively companion, watch for spine and joint changes with a veterinarian, and set up the home so favorite perches are easy to reach.
